Bathroom sconce lights are a popular request for many new homeowners as well as those who simply want to upgrade their bathroom lighting.  Generally in older homes, bathroom fixtures have been simple and effective yet lack any true character or flair.   Today thanks to the many contributions from designers and architects there are a variety of different lights and bases to choose from.  A sconce light can provide a unique atmosphere that can illuminate your bathroom in different ways.  This blog is a step by step process which will help you to safely install a bathroom sconce light.

1)  For bathrooms with a traditional overhead light source the process is simple.  First, remove the old fixture from the wall after turning off all the power which supplies electricity to the existing light.  The fixture will have screws which hold it into place.  The screws are attached to a bracket which is normally secured to a junction box.  Unscrew the fixture screws and pull the base away from the wall.  Obviously you will want to remove all light bulbs before removing the base.  If unsure about how to properly install or uninstall your new bathroom light sconce, contact Swartz Electric for all your electrical needs.  Swartz holds a A plus Better Business rating and is the leading Southern Colorado electrical company in business today!

2) Unscrew the wiring that exist in the junction box from the wiring on the existing sconce light.  The wiring should be simple on a 120 volt circuit.  A new 200 watt bathroom sconce will work fine with this voltage.   Unscrew the wires black from black, white or gray from gray and green from green.  Double check your power status with a non contact hot stick.

3) Take the new sconce light and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for installing your new fixture. Mount the bracket that comes with the new fixture. Wire the hot, neutral and ground wire accordingly.    When installing the new bathroom sconce take care to install the fixture in a “clean” fashion. Screw in the appropriate light bulbs, turn the power back on and check your new light.

4)  Troubleshooting a sconce light that fails is relatively simple.  Make sure you have the proper power source to the fixture.   Typically a 120 circuit is sufficient.  For some bathroom lighting fixtures a 220 circuit may be deemed necessary but these are commonly used in commercial applications.    Check to make sure your wires are “capped” securely and that the wires are connected correctly.  If your wire is older, typically found in older homes, consider replacing the old wire with new 14/2 NMB (or non-metallic, high temperature wire).  This wire is relatively inexpensive and can be found at any Home Depot or Lowe’s Home Improvement location.

This is a standard method for installing a bathroom scone lighting fixture.  While there are a multitude of bathroom lighting fixtures available, they are all typically wired the same way.  Always follow the guidelines provided in the manufacturer’s recommendations and consult a professional electrician for any concerns.  As always, consider your safety as a number one priority when installing your light fixture.  Swartz Electric can help you with all of your home improvement electrical needs.  Contact Swartz today!
